🎨 Bitcoin's new NFTs

is it bitcoin NFT bull season?

GM everyone. This is 2036, the newsletter that pays you.

If you're a bitcoin nerd, you'll know that every bitcoin is divided into one million satoshis.

At today's prices, 1 satoshi is worth $0.0002.

Yet someone recently paid $50,000 for 1 satoshi.

Yes - they paid for a bitcoin NFT, the first of its kind.

Since its ascent to $69K in 2021, bitcoin's lost some of its luster.

We're all staring at it feeling like - why don't you move.

But in January of this year, Casey Rodarmor, a developer, published a blog post about Bitcoin NFTs. I'll admit, I had to read it 4 times to understand it.

You see, today, most NFTs are built on the Ethereum blockchain.

But Casey discovered a way to inscribe a satoshi, on the bitcoin blockchain, with data - like text, pictures, and videos. He built the protocol to do it and called it Ordinal.

These satoshis inscribed with pictures have become the new Bitcoin NFTs. And they're selling like hotcakes.

For now, the NFTs look a lot like the ones on Ethereum. In fact, the most famous collection is Bitcoin...punks.

Looks familiar?

Ordinals are all the rage right now:

  • bitcoin maxis hate them because they take up block space they believe should be saved for currency transactions

  • devs, creatives and NFT maxis love them because they're new, cool and could bring fresh life to bitcoin

  • everyone's hoping it will be their next get-rich-quick scheme

One bitcoin NFT, two bitcoin NFTs...

But whether you agree or not, Ordinals are important because:

  • bitcoin is the biggest crypto in the world (2X the size of ETH)

  • NFTs drive growth and adoption fast

Initially, minting them was a rather complicated process. But last week, Gamma released a super simple way to do it.

And that will be our task for today.

✅ Task: earn $15 in BTC for minting a bitcoin NFT

Here at 2036, we're strong believers in learning by doing. Much better to YOLO with $5 into something new to learn than to spend a week reading about it.

Minting a bitcoin NFT isn't difficult, expensive, or complicated.

That's why we're gonna challenge you to do it today.

Even if you don't do anything with it, you will learn about the Ordinal protocol and hopefully get psyched about playing around more in crypto.

So here's today's task:

Step #1: Head to Gamma.io

Step #2: Mint an Ordinal NFT and send us the link to it by replying to this email. Include your BTC address so we can pay you.

The best submission will win $15 in BTC.

You have full freedom to be creative. We wanna see what you can throw at us.

Tomorrow, we'll share the best resources we've come across this week in crypto.

And with the markets ripping, we'll also explain whether it's time to greedy or fearful.

Until then - toodeloo.

P.S. you can read the blog post of Casey Rodarmor about Ordinals right here.
