Most of the crypto news today is regulatory or political - who will sue who over what assets, whether between Sam Bankman-Fried and, well, the world - or between the Winklevoss twins and crypto OG Barry Silbert.

A lot is going to unfold over the next few months, but remember that 99% of it is more noise than signal. The best thing we can do is focus on the fundamentals and set ourselves up to thrive no matter what happens next - by learning and executing.

That's what we're gonna do today. On that note, learning about bitcoin and crypto more broadly starts with having a decent understanding of money in general.

Now, despite the name, not all cryptocurrencies are intended to be used as actual currency. Most are more like utility tokens.

But some do aim to become established forms of digital money, including the OG we're gonna cover today - bitcoin.

Bitcoin plays many different roles - one of which is to serve as a form of digital gold.

So before we dive into bitcoin, it pays to have a quick glance at other forms of money and stores of wealth that have existed throughout history - like gold.

For thousands of years, humans used barter to exchange goods and services. You give me some milk, I'll give you some fur.

But as human society evolved, we started introducing new forms of money - namely gold, paper money, and what we have today - fiat money.

If you wanted to go really deep on the topic, you could start right off by reading The Bitcoin Standard. But for now, we’re not going to make you read an entire book to complete a task. Instead, we’ll point you to a shorter resource.
